In the years 2007-2008 a bird monitoring system has been implemented, comissoned by Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection. It consisted of 11 individual monitoring programs. In 2010 a Forest Owl Suvey (MLSL for Polish Monitoring Lęgowych Sów Leśnych) has also been included in the system, and since the very beginning led by Owl Conservation Association.

MLSL is a part of Moderately Abundant Species Monitoring Program and applies to forest owls species included in the Appendix I of EU’s Birds Directive: Eagle Owl Bubo bubo, Ural Owl Strix uralensis, Boreal Owl Aegolius funereus, Pygmy Owl Glaucidium passerinum (as basic species). The counting also includes Tawny Owl Strix aluco and Long-eared Owl Asio otus (as additional species).
Main goals of the program are:
– gaining knowledge of the abundance of forest owls in different regions of Poland and tracking trends of the species abundance indexes
– characterizing the spread and spread trends of particular owl species in different regions of Poland as well as in the whole country.
– defining human impact (forestry mainly) on abundance of different owl species
In the years 2010-2015 40 sample plots located all over the country have been incorporated in MLSL, 20 of which (50%) were, at least partially, located in Natura 2000 network. Since 2016 the number of plots has increased by 5 and now MLSL is conducted on 45 plots. 24 plots (53%) are located in Natura 2000.
There are about 40 associates working in the field.
